What is Electronic Data Discovery ?

Electronic Data Discovery is the formal process in civil lawsuits of the discovery of factual information that, at any time, has been created, retained, stored, processed, converted, reviewed, produced or presented in electronic form by computers or other electronic media.

It customarily refers to the process of requesting or producing electronic information under rules 26, 34 and 45 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and similar state rules.

It is a method developed to extract critical metadata, convert them into universal viewer format [TIFF / PDF] - retaining the relationship between the documents, electronically bates and organize them into structured database formats like Concordance, Summation, IPRO, Opticon or any other custom specifications for easy retrieval

What is an “Electronic Document” ?

Electronic Document means the information created, stored, and/or utilized using computer technology. For example, business applications such as word processors, spreadsheets, databases and Internet applications such as e-mail, web traffic etc. Such information is stored in computer-based record storage such as disks, tapes, and drives.

Need of Electronic Data Discovery

After the 90’s, the usage of computers has become a necessity at every possible step. 93% of data produced in 1999 was electronic and this figure is rising. This way, ever-increasing usage of computers has led to the creation of huge volume of electronic documents.     • Search is also possible on the basis of the word or group of words being present in the metadata of the attachments that includes the content of the file for text files, Word Documents, Excel Sheets, etc.
